What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a leg vein treatment, where a liquid solution is injected into small veins using very fine needles. The sclerosing agent used by our Sclerotherapist is Aethoxysclerol. The addition of a small amount of air allows the solution to be converted into foam and this process increases the potency of the injected solution.
Sclerotherapy is used to treat small veins not associated with reflux along any of the major veins. The treatment is particularly useful in treating vessels that are residual after either Endovenous Laser Treatment or varicose vein surgery.
It is not uncommon for multiple sessions to be required to achieve optimum results, and it may take up to three months for optimal appearances to be achieved. While each treatment is usually associated with a 70% improvement, it is not possible to guarantee perfect results.

Preparing for Sclerotherapy
Some patients find it beneficial to apply topical anaesthetic to the legs. This should be done at least half an hour before the treatment and covered with wrapping such as Glad-Wrap.
It is important to wear loose trousers on the day of the appointment and bring a pair of shorts to the appointment. You will wear the shorts during the injecting process.
Take two Panadol tablets one hour prior to the appointment and ensure that you have had a proper breakfast and lunch and are properly hydrated before the procedure.

Sclerotherapy Treatment Process
You will be positioned lying relatively flat on a comfortable bed while the affected area will be cleansed with an antiseptic agent.
A trained Sclerotherapist will perform multiple injections over each of the veins.
After the vein treatment a compression stocking will be personally fitted and applied for you.

Sclerotherapy Cost
Sclerotherapy is a sophisticated procedure carried out by a highly trained vein specialist. We can determine the costs of your procedure prior to you undergoing treatment – and we will ensure all Sclerotherapy costs will be discussed with you upfront and will provide you with a written quotation.
Sclerotherapy Recovery
You will be instructed to go for a walk of between ten and twenty minutes to remove the sclerosing agent from deep veins and to promote circulation in your leg.
For full Sclerotherapy recovery, you should wear the compression stockings continuously for twenty-four hours a day for the first three days. Some individuals are unable to wear the stockings during sleep, often because of tightness in the feet. If this occurs, simply stop wearing the stockings to bed.
After the three days, you should wear these stockings only during the day and remove them at night. Stockings should be worn for two to three weeks and longer if instructed.
You should walk for thirty minutes twice a day and maintain other normal activities.
When sitting, elevate your legs but ensure that there is a slight bend in your knees as some patients obstruct the vein behind the knee with their legs out straight.

Post-Sclerotherapy Treatment
It is common for patients to ask questions about lumps and tenderness associated with the spider veins – this is normal and quite common.
Sometimes, during sclerotherapy recovery, a tender bleb can develop in the vein. If this is acutely tender it may need to be released with a needle and you should contact the Brisbane Vein Clinic.
Discolouration is normal post vein treatment. Early bruising disappears within two to three weeks. Sometimes, the veins are more visible because of trapped blood within the small vessels. However, you will be shown how to distinguish between entrapped blood and persistent veins.
Phlebitis Inflammation can occur along the course of the treated veins and may occur as a reaction to sclerosin.

Possible Complications of SclerotherapyDeep venous thrombosis (DVT). The incidence of DVT after sclerotherapy is approximately 1 in 8000. It is more likely to occur if patients have an inherited disorder of clotting. Our Brisbane Vein Clinic recommends ceasing hormone therapy prior to treatment as it may reduce the risk of DVT.
Migraine. This is often associated with visual disturbance Stroke. This is an extremely rare complication. Intra-arterial injection. Inadvertent injection into an artery can occur if placement of the needle is incorrect. When performed by a qualified Sclerotherapist, this is highly unusual. Skin Necrosis. Inadvertent injection into the skin can occur if placement of the needle is incorrect. This may result in skin ulcers. |
