Varicose Veins

Normal Vein

Varicose Veins are abnormal, dilated veins.  The image on the left shows a normal vein. Blood flows upwards towards the heart. If the blood attempts to move towards the feet, valves close and prevent the reverse flow. This is called a competent vein.

Abnormal Vein

The image on the right shows a varicose. Blood falling back towards the feet is not constrained by the valves, which are broken or absent. The vein dilates and elongates. You see these bumps as prominent veins on the legs
