Biography

Medical School         University of Queensland

Fellow                       Royal Australasian College of Surgeons

Registration              General Surgery
                                Vascular Surgery

Dr. Russell Price commenced medical training at the University of Queensland in 1977.  In 1980, he intermitted for a year in order to complete a Bachelor of Medical Science, completing a thesis on the structure and function of muscles.  This interest in muscular activity would lead to innovations in the treatment of arterial entrapment syndrome more than 20 years later.  After completing his medical degree in 1983, he was a first year resident at Princess Alexandra Hospital and then moved to country Queensland as a relieving medical superintendent for Central West Queensland.  Throughout this time, he worked as a solo medical superintendent serving large areas of Central Queensland with remote support supplied by the flying surgeon. During this time that he became interested in surgical procedures and had to perform many solo procedures as a matter of necessity.  On occasions, he flew from Winton to the far west borders as the flying doctor.

After return to Princess Alexandra in 1988, he was successful entering the general surgical training program and completed this training in 1993.  During his training, he was exposed to a transplant surgery, vascular surgery, and a full gamut of general surgical procedures. He worked on the transplant team with Professor Russell Strong, who had performed the first liver transplant in Australia. During this time, he won the Princess Alexandra Hospital Research prize and the Neville Davis Research prize.

By 1993, he had completed his General Surgical Training and in 1994, traveled to the United Kingdom and worked under the supervision of Professor Peter Bell, the Chairman of the European Society of Vascular Surgery.  He also had the opportunity to work with
Dr. Amman Bolia, considered to be the great pioneers of endovascular techniques.  Immediately on his arrival in the UK, he was involved in the first endovascular aortic graft procedure involving the EVT team.  In 1995 he was appointed as Senior Registrar in Vascular Surgery.
He returned to Australia in the early 1996 and established a busy private practice.  After years of preparation, he performed the first private EVAR (endovascular aortic repair) in 2000 in Queensland and subsequently was the first Queensland vascular surgeon to perform ovarian vein embolization, RF ablation, endovenous laser treatment, and the VenaSeal procedure.  Along the way, he worked with Dr. Peter Hadjipetrou, an interventional cardiologist to perform the first truly percutaneous endovascular aortic repair and also the first double D repair of aortic and iliac aneurysms.

As a side note, Dr Price has spent time standing in for other surgeons in remote locations, working in Mt Isa, and traveling to the Solomon Islands to work on the Ramsay Military Base. He is an occasional sailor, and loves to in the Whitsundays during early May.
From 1998 to 2002, Dr Price ran a software development company in order to create a computer program for storing surgical procedures and results. The software, called 'Surgical Director', was used as a central part of the Royal Commission into the Bundaberg Hospital
In 2013, he formulated to establish a private clinic in the pleasant surrounds of Kangaroo Point.  The result of years of planning finally lead to the establishment of the  VeinCentral Clinic, and have realised Dr Prices' ambition of having a center dedicated to the advanced treatment of venous and vascular disorders.
